Anaysis of 'Paranormal Activity'

The Trailer starts off with live footage of people using a hand held camera to build up insensity as there is no music being played, but just a strange hussling sound, the cuts are quite long but unsettling, captions are used to explain to the audience about what it going out. it then cuts to a point of view shot from the back of the cinema to show what the audience are shown. there is still no music but a build up of sound which then cuts to the front of the audience watching the film. which then cuts into the film itself with no music but the building up sound along with dialougue. the characters within the film are using a hand held camera to make it unsettling for the audience, the fast cuts from the audience to the film and back again. the point of view shot shows the actor in the film taking us on a tour using his own camera along with no music but dialogue. a steady camera is then viewed onto the bed with cuts back to the frightend audience. the build up of music changes into a loud crash which is quickly followed by a loud bang within the film which creates double fear. throughout the whole trailer we are watching from the audiences point of view. fats cuts around the house to give the audience a better idea of how the layout is set out. the lighting used shows a nightvision onto the bed when events happen, the light quickly changes after the loud bang. even faster cuts back to the audience and all we can hear is dialougue and the expression on the audiences faces. fades out on a womans scared face back to the steady camera using nightvision viewing the bed. the screen goes fuzzy and changes which increases fear because somethings going to go wrong. the music biluds up while the sheet is being blown up, this creates a distraction for when the door is slammed shut, the music helps build the tension up for the main event. it then cuts quickly to the audience again screaming. the screen goes black to show a jittery caption of critics about the film. cuts back to the film using a hand held camera showing what has happend to the character. then cuts back to the audience with only random strange robotic sounds being played as well as cutting to another caption a sound bridge is used with dialogue through the scenes. all the captions and scenes start to jitter to create tension. still from the audiences point of view the camera is unsteady and keeps cutting to different characters and areas of the house this causes confusion as well as tension. cuts to another jittery caption then back to the audience with dialogue still being played the whole way through, with captions and the screen going fuzzy, the audience is now being confused by it all because alot is going on. bang sounds go in time with the scene being cut when finally a body is thrown into the camera and it all stops, when the film title fades in using a jittery technique again with wierd sounds being played quietly, ends with a list of cinemas where it is going to be shown.

Analysis of 'Devil'

This film is set within an elevator at the top of a skyscraper. The five main characters don't know each other, when all of a sudden the elevator electronics fail. one by one the victims are being killed but none of them knows who is doing it as they all turn on one another and it turns out that the devil is possessing one of them which is the one killing them all however the audience don't find out until the end of the film.

the trailer starts off with opening credits, with the films logo's. New York city is filmed from a very unusual shot of being upside down. this is used to make the audience feel very uncomfortable and on edge. this matches with the music, although the music is quiet, the piano being played adds a sense of intimidation. The shots fade to a young woman happily walking through a building past the security guard. her body language shows that she is confident as she walks past. the shot fades into her walking back to the security guard. the dialogue between the two characters doesn't seem alarming to the audience however we are also getting introduced to the characters but not realizing it. it then cuts back to the intimidating angle of being upside down scaling New York introducing everybody that worked within the film. shots fade from all the different characters this is where the audience understands who is going to be in the film. the shot from in front of the old lady and the man shows the elevator opening from behind in a slow motion. this gives the effect that something is going to happen in that particular elevator. it then cuts back to introducing the directors from the upside down angle, this is starting to build the tension up. we then see all five characters in the elevator, we can tell they all don't know each other and we sense that awkward silence. the audience are taken on a adventure down the elevator lines where it fades into the elevator where there 5 main characters are. we sense that this is most likely to be the place where every thing is going to happen. more titles are shown while continuing down the lines. while passing the elevator it cuts inside where the elevator stops. the music playing has built up to an event . in between cuts of the setting and characters there about 1 second gaps of just complete darkness this causes the audience to become scared because they don't know what to expect. close ups of the characters shows there facial expressions and shows the fear within there faces. the unsteady camera used after the woman is hurt creates tension and distress that the characters are feeling at that point. the audience also becomes unsettled. cuts to the CCTV footage of them in the elevator shows that the people watching them can see everything except when it all goes darks. cuts to captions on a black background with a red font which symbolises blood and the devil which also matches with the title of the film and the audience can relate to it straight away. fast cuts to show people outside of the elevator trying to help get the characters out. more captions are shown to create tension and the music increases and becomes louder to show fear from the main characters as well as unsettling the audience. shots of lights shutting off in the building as well as the elevator indicates that there will be a event that happens that will shock the audience which is why the music lightens building up a suspense. After the mirror smashes the women screams then the music stops and plays the sound of an elevator ding noise. while this is going on to match the rhythm of the bells quick shots of the film are shown very quickly and cuts are fast. then the noise of an elector opens while the screen is jet black and you hear the voices of the characters sounding very distressed. the end shot is only lit by a candle that the character lights. in the background there is a figure which was unexpected coming from the darkness this would cause the audience to be shocked while ending the trailer with a dark background with the title of the film in red font.
